Oscar Pistorius: Guilty or Not-Guilty?
By Alex Gentry
His physique was crippled as an infant, and now, so is his reputation. The 26-year -old South African Olympian has recently been charged with premediated murder. Prosecutors in Pretoria, South Africa, have accused Pistorius, 26, of intentionally shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, 29, in the bathroom of his home in a gated community in the South African capital. He was released on bail.
Investigators are still trying to uncover more details. Pistorius claims he thought his girlfriend was an intruder, and shot through the bathroom door with that in mind. To help his case, Pistorius also claims he’d been receiving continuous death rights during the past several months. The South Africa region is indeed known for frequent violent intrusions into civilian homes.
Chief Magistrate (Judge) Desmond Nair ruled the charge against Pistorius to premeditated murder, saying he could not rule out the possibility that the Olympian planned the death of his girlfriend. But as the facts come in, the incident looks less and less premeditated, and perhaps even accidental.
Regardless of the lack of clarity in this case, many people have formed their own opinions. What do the people of East High think?
“I have my suspicions, however, I believe the shooting to be an accident,” said East junior Bryce Nitzsche. “I believe Pistorius in his defense that he thought it was an intruder.”
On the other end of the spectrum is 9th grader Ethan Reid.
“There’s no way he would’ve shot through that door without the slightest idea that his girlfriend was behind there. I’d say it was intentional.”
