Seniors Honored at Assembly

Yesterday was the Senior Honor assembly in the auditorium. It started out with Principal Slauson giving his speech and moved onto Dr. Taylor saying the awards for Lauren Works and Sarah Hove who were in Omaha for tennis. The two girls decided to try something new and Skyped in from Omaha to listen to their honors being read. The program then moved on to reading all the honors for the rest of the seniors. LSW Choirs Perform Spring Concert

Southwest Choirs and Show choirs performed their spring concert May 15.
Their  repertoire consisted of songs from musicals including West Side Story, Newsies, and Cinderella. Chamber Choir also performed novel songs including one entitled “Little Potato.” The  choirs sang pieces from different countries such as a traditional Irish song and one with African influences.
After the concert choirs performed there was a short intermission and the show choirs sang and danced their last show for the season.

Yearbook distribution begins May 16

It’s nearing the end of the school year, which means that yearbooks will be distributed to all that have ordered and paid for one.
Tomorrow, May 16, yearbooks will be distributed after fourth block for all students with a fourth block class, and during fourth block for those who don’t have a fourth block class.
If you can’t be here tomorrow to pick up your yearbook, don’t worry because yearbooks will also be available Friday before school from 7:30 until 8:10 and after school from 3 until 3:30. They will also be …

AP Testing almost over

Starting On February 4 LSW students could begin signing up for AP testing with the bookkeeper. Each test costs a total of $89. AP testing started May 6 and finished May 17. Students could not arrive early or late as they cannot leave early. Morning testing begins at 8 a.m. and end at noon. Afternoon tests begin at 12 p.m. and end at 4p.m.
No refunds are available to students who failed to attend the AP testing. Students must have the receipt to take the test. AP tests for …

May Blood Drive

About 145 students came to the wrestling room May 1 and 2 to partake in the school’s most recent and last blood drive of the year.
In order to donate blood a student needs to be at least 17 years old, at least 115 pounds, feeling well, no antibiotics in the previous 72 hours, no tattoos in the previous 30 days, no infectious diseases and students need to provide a photo ID.  Some scholarship are available for those who donate. Wrestling charges ahead at state

Wrestling has been preparing for state by having a strong season this year.
State is being held in Omaha at the CenturyLink Center from Feb. 14 to 16.
Lincoln Southwest is close behind Omaha Burke at 67 and 53 points respectively. With wrestlers such as Kenny Martin easily winning two matches and improving to 42-0, the race to the championship is a close call. Also in the team race are Grand Island and Kearney.

Varsity wins big

Both boys and girls varsity won in their games last night vs Omaha Westside.
Boys: Lincoln Southwest 67, Omaha Westside 64. Boys now have an 11-7 record.
Girls: Lincoln Southwest 51, Omaha Westside 45. Girls now have a 15-3 record.
With these wins it helps boost the confidence of the teams going into tonight’s game at Lincoln Northeast.
Girls play at 5:45 p.m.
Guys play at 7:30  p.m.
Both boys and girls teams met Northeast previously at the HAC holiday tournament and defeated them.

Emeralds fundraise through a dance competition

Tonight the Emeralds are hosting their own version of dancing with the stars called “Dancing with the Emeralds.”  This is a fundraising event that will happen at 6:30 p.m. in the main gym of Southwest.
Student’s could have purchased tickets ahead of time but they will also be sold at the door for $5 each.

Obama, Kerrey win student vote!

With the election coming up, students grades 4-12 throughout LPS had the opportunity to vote Nov. 1.  Students voted for President, U.S Senate, Congress for District 1 and for the State Board of Education.
KFOR sponsored the vote to teach students the importance of being educated voters. Students who get involved are more likely to be active citizens when they grow up as well as life-long voters.

Yearbook distribution continues May 21-25

            The first day of yearbook distribution has changed from Thursday, May 17 to Friday, May 18.  Yearbook distribution will take place during block 4 (for those out for the day) and after school in the hallway near the weight room.
Yearbooks will also be distributed Monday, May 21  before and after school.  After that yearbooks must be picked up from the bookkeeper’s office.  Students need to bring their student ID and be on the list to pick up their books.
