Softball wins back-to-back

With only two early season losses, the Silver Hawk softball team finished the season on top for the second consecutive year  and even made it back for Homecoming.
Junior Mallory Noakes said that the two losses were “for the most part a good thing because it didn’t (create anymore) pressure.”
Senior pitching sensation Becca Changstrom added, “It’s good to be in those close games for state and districts.” The Creighton recruit’s ERA (entering districts) was an astonishing 0.18 in 187 innings. In that span she struck out 402 batters.

It seems that every few years, a new crop of trendy eyewear makes its debut. This year, it’s either thick rims or no rims, as five of Southwest’s finest students and staff show off their cool glasses.

Millard West defeated Southwest 35-14 at Seacrest Field on Saturday night.  With the game deadlocked at 14-14 in the third quarter, the Hawks were driving in Wildcat territory before a game-changing interception by Zach Leinbaugh. He took it 100 yards for a touchdown, and Southwest failed to score again.
Although the season is over, Southwest proved to be a big factor in the playoffs, making it to the semifinals. They finished with a 7-5 record, with playoff victories over Millard North and Southeast.

#2 Papillion LaVista South swept #7 Southwest 3-0 in the first round of the volleyball state playoffs Thursday night at Pershing Auditorium. Led by Husker recruits (and twins) Amber and Kadie Rolfzen, the Titans prevailed 25-19, 25-12, 25-19.
“We didn’t play our best and it was a little disappointing,” said head coach Mary Schropfer, “but we had a great season and don’t let that be the thing you remember.”

The Silver Hawk volleyball was victorious Wednesday night at North Star in both of their games. With the district championship on the line, Southwest first defeated Northeast 3-0, followed by Bellevue West 3-0. They won the A-7 district championship en route to another state tournament berth.
They finished the season with a record of 27-7 after districts. The state tournament begins Nov. 12 at the Pershing Center in Lincoln. #7 Southwest will face #2 Papillion La Vista South in the first round at 8:30 p.m.

#7 Southwest avenged an earlier loss to #2 Southeast Friday night, defeating the Knights, 14-7. A crowd of 5,400 people watched at Seacrest Field as the Hawks kept their postseason dreams alive. The key to the victory was the four turnovers committed by the Knights. Three interceptions (two by Austin Tompkins) and a fumble recovery were the main factors in a strong defensive showing.
