Links Bring The Noise

By Gwendolyn Ihrie
When I drive to school, I want to listen to music.  I don’t want to hear about what Matt McKay thinks of Lindsey Lohan’s latest fiasco.  I just want to find energy to get me excited about starting school at 6:45 A.M.  Let me listen to “Tik Tok”  or “I Gotta Feeling!”
Two juniors from Lincoln High agree with me and decided to take charge with a literal charge of wattage.  Radio wattage, that is.  Marya Case-Ruchala and Phalin Strong, juniors from Lincoln High and the Arts & Humanities …

Link Basketball Dominance Continues

The boys Varsity basketball team continues to dominate the Class A season.  After an impressive run of road victories over Norfolk (then rated number one) and Omaha Benson, the Links have not looked back.  Handling Lincoln Northeast and Omaha Northwest were key home victories; consequently, LHS then rose to the challenge of venturing to the Omaha Cage Classic tournament… they took the title.  It appears that, home or away, the Links come to play.
The season, however, has not come without its struggles.  There were mid-season obstacles, such as an injury …

Losing the Battle with Snow Days

Snow Day One – December 15
The morning of the first snow day of the 2009-2010 school year: Epic!  Since school canceled the night before, you were able to stay up late, not do homework, and are now waking up around 11 o’clock in the morning – roughly 5th period.  It’s time for a bowl of cereal- alone or with other LPS siblings- to help mess up your daily routine even more.  Parents?  Not at home unless they are also LPS employed or work from home.  This is good news …

This Is Your Brain On Digital Diaries

By: Matthew Juber
Ever find yourself wishing you could remember exactly what happened during a specific event? Now with new “digital diaries” it might be much more plausible. But what effect does this have on the brain? Would having computers remember everything for us mean our brain wouldn’t get enough use and start to deteriorate?
Psychologists are unsure of what to think as of yet, because research has been minimal. The general consensus seems to suggest that it most likely won’t impact our minds as long as we continue to use our …

Def Jam Celebrates 25 Years of Beats & Rhymes

By Nic Brown
So here they are, after 25 whole years. From 1984 to 2009. From the minivan to the hybrid. From the peak of Michael to the death of Michael. From the microwave-sized Apple Macintosh, to a laptop that can fit in small backpacks. From wax, to plastic, to wax again, then onto the aforementioned computers, and onto gadgets smaller than a deck of cards. From skinny jeans to… skinny jeans. Most importantly: from a college dorm room in New York, to the ears of …

Tectonic Theatre Member Lectures At LHS

By Chris Maly, Adviser
Ten years ago Matthew Shepard’s murder captured headlines across the globe.  A young University of Wyoming student had been beaten and left to die on a barbed wire fence on the outskirts of Laramie.  A former classmate of mine from Grand Island was the first to find Shepherd in critical condition.  Days later, he passed away.  The Tectonic Theatre, however, dedicated itself to the story, and in doing so, defined a moment that spoke to America’s tradition of hate and murder.  The modern lynching of Matthew Shepard …

LHS English Instructor Terry Keefe’s Musical Travels: Ireland and Beyond

By Nic Brown
Lincoln High English instructor Terrence F. Keefe is quite cultured. Like many, Keefe is passionate about music and his heritage. He, however, may very well be more active than most in his participation in both. Keefe plays in several musical collectives, and toured several European countries (Ireland included) last summer. “I play in a band called Donnybrook out of Omaha that is an Irish folk group,” Keefe explains. I also have played for more than thirty years in an Irish group out of Lincoln called Paddywhack.” …
